How Mosquito Infestations Are Controlled

Mosquitoes infestations are very persistent, and getting rid of them requires a comprehensive approach. In this article, we’re going to go over the methods used by pest control professionals to remove these infestations.

How mosquitoes infest a property

Mosquito infestations generally start when you have a standing body of water. This type of water is very attractive to mosquito females, which will use this water to store their eggs. A mosquito can lay up to 100 eggs at a time, and it takes about a week for a mosquito to go from the egg to being an adult. So a mosquito infestation can get out of hand very fast, if the right conditions are present.

How a pro will control the infestation

The first step of the mosquito control process is the inspection, during which the pro will try to identify any bodies of water that may be causing the infestation. If the body of water is small, it can simply be removed from the property, and one of the main causes of the infestation is gone.

In other situations however, such as when you have a lake nearby, the water cannot really be removed, so other approaches need to be used. One of these approaches is to use repellents to keep the adults at bay, and another is to use certain tools or systems that can kill larvae in large bodies of water.

When it comes to killing off adult mosquitoes, pros will use either mosquito traps, sprays, various repellent products, mechanical barriers and vegetation management. Many of these methods are designed to work in tandem as part of an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) process that addresses the cause of the infestation, kills off as many of the pests as possible, and then prevents future infestations from taking place.

Unfortunately with mosquitoes, it can be pretty much impossible to kill every mosquito that is flying around outdoors, but tools such as mosquito traps, repellents and ULV foggers can be used to keep the mosquito population down to a minimum and away from people.
