The holidays are supposed to be the season of joy, laughter, and time spent with family and friends. But as much as I love transforming my home into a cozy winter wonderland, there’s one thing I dread every year—uninvited pest “guests.” This time of year, things like spiders, ants, mice, and even roaches seem to think my home is theirs too.
If you’ve noticed creepy crawlies sneaking into your space around the holidays, you’re not alone. The combination of falling temperatures, stored decorations, and holiday food makes our homes the perfect retreat for pests.
I had my fair share of battles with these invaders, but after much trial and error, I’ve learned a few key things about what draws them in, how to spot them early, and—most importantly—how to get rid of them for good. By the end of this post, you’ll have all the tools you need to keep the real Grinches of the season out of your celebrations.
First off, it’s no coincidence that pests seem extra active during the holidays. Everything we love about this season—warm homes, decorations, delicious food—also happens to be a magnet for these unwanted visitors.
Pests want to escape the cold just as much as we do. The second temperatures drop, they start searching for warm indoor spaces. Cracks, vents, and open windows are basically their front door.
I don’t know about you, but pulling my holiday decorations out of storage always feels like unwrapping a time capsule. Unfortunately, those forgotten corners of the basement or attic are ideal hiding places for pests like spiders, silverfish, and mice. Left undisturbed for months, they’ll turn storage boxes into cozy homes.
The smell of cookies baking and big family dinners doesn’t just make us happy—it’s a feast for pests too. Party leftovers, crumbs, and improperly stored food are like ringing a dinner bell for ants, roaches, and rodents.
With all the comings and goings during the holidays, doors are left open longer, luggage comes in and out, and visitors from other areas might unknowingly bring in uninvited pests.
Now that we know why the holiday season tends to invite pests, here’s a quick breakdown of the most common invaders and what to look for.
If you’ve heard scratching sounds in your walls at night or noticed gnawed packaging in your pantry, you might have a rodent problem. These critters are particularly good at sneaking in through the smallest gaps.
How I deal with it: Seal up any holes or cracks around your home. I use steel wool to block holes—rodents can’t chew through it. Keep food in airtight containers, and if I hear scuttling sounds, I set up humane traps immediately.
Ants are tiny but persistent. I always find them scouting my kitchen counters or pantry if I’ve left crumbs or sweets out for too long.
How I deal with it: For ants, prevention is key. I wipe down surfaces with vinegar, which disrupts their scent trails. Keep sugary treats like cookies and candies sealed up tight. If they do invade, bait traps work wonders.
While most spiders aren’t harmful, their webs popping up in random corners can ruin that clean holiday vibe I work hard to create. And finding one in the tree? No thanks.
How I deal with it: I make a habit of shaking out stored decorations and vacuuming up old webbing before putting up holiday decor. Caulking small gaps in walls and windows keeps new spiders from getting in.
These are the ultimate unwanted guests. Roaches love dark, humid spaces near food supplies, so kitchens and basements are their go-to areas.
How I deal with it: Keeping a spotless kitchen is my first line of defense. No crumbs, no standing water, and no dirty dishes overnight. When I lived in a roach-prone apartment, I kept gel bait in hidden spots, and it worked like a charm.
These little guys hide out in places like boxes, closets, and under sinks. I always find them near old holiday cards or wrapping paper because they’re attracted to paper and dead skin cells.
How I deal with it: Dehumidifiers are lifesavers for silverfish since they thrive in moist areas. I also keep storage areas clean and use sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes.
After years of dealing with holiday invaders, I’ve come up with a simple plan that works every time. Here’s my go-to routine for keeping my home pest-free during the holidays (and beyond):
Walk around your house and look for any cracks, gaps, or holes in the exterior. Trust me, rodents can squeeze through holes as small as a dime! Seal these areas with caulk or weather-stripping, and use mesh screens for vents.
Cleanliness really is half the battle. Vacuum and sweep daily, especially around areas where food is prepared or eaten. And don’t forget to declutter your storage spaces—this was a game changer for me.
Keep all food in airtight containers, even non-perishables like flour and sugar. And don’t leave dirty dishes or leftover party food sitting out—pests can smell it from a mile away.
Before I bring any decorations out of storage, I check for signs of pests like droppings or webbing. If it looks suspicious, I clean it outside (and gently evict any current residents).
If chemical sprays aren’t your thing, give natural deterrents like peppermint oil or vinegar a try. Both smell great to us but act as a big red flag to pests like spiders and ants.
The holidays should be about celebrating (not stressing about pests!). By staying one step ahead and taking a few precautions, I’ve managed to keep my home free of uninvited critters—and you can too.
If you’re battling an invasion that feels out of control, don’t hesitate to call in the pros. Sometimes, a professional touch is the best way to ensure your holidays are truly worry-free.
Here’s to a holiday season filled with warmth, laughter, and absolutely no pest problems!
